OK, guess this will be the last post from me for the moment. I’ll return when i have completely fulfill my priorities. Why?
First of all, allow me introduce myself. I’m Chin Loon, a 23 year old male doing his final year in Civil Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. I’ll be graduating this coming May so a lot of unfinished business have to be dealt with currently. One of those, and it happens to be the most important of all, is my first degree thesis presentation. Before that, let me introduce you the departments in Faculty of Civil Engineering. They are:
- Department of Structure & Material
- Department of Hydraulics & Hydrology
- Department of Geotechnical & Transportation
- Department of Environmental Engineering
- Department of Information Technology in Civil Engineering
Well, i’m currently doing my research with the Department of Environmental Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Johan Sohaili. He’s an interesting and inspiring man though some of my coursemates think this is an overstatement. Anyway that doesn’t matter for i get along well with him. He published a number of papers locally and internationally. Thanks to his guidance and experience, i’m in my final stage of my thesis preparation.
The title for my thesis is “Effects of Nutrient in Sewage Sludge on Horticulture Plants”. Well, when talking about sludge, most people will turn away for they have an impression that sludge is very very dirty and smelly and most of the time hazardous to human health. Well, that statement is partly true because if you know how to handle properly, you should be safe and sound, just like me. =)
I don’t know the reason behind but i have a soft spot for sludge and because of this, i have been labeled “weird” and “crazy”. Some even called me “Sludge Man” jokingly after they have watched Superman, Spiderman and Cicat Man. Anyway, that shows how different i’m from the rest. =)
Basically sewage sludge contains some good amount of nutrient which are essential to plant growth and development. So here i am studying the concentration of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sulphur, Iron, Copper, Zinc and Manganese in sewage sludge, and evaluate the effects when the sludge is applied on the plants as fertiliser at daily basis.
Well, I have to water the plants daily. Actually i have another reason to do that. Everyday i face technological stuff too much and i need time and space to maintain the balance with nature. I find watering the plants very relaxing and enjoyable. There are a few times that i talked to the plants. Luckily nobody saw that if not people will think i’m crazy. LOL. It’s like having babies and watching them grow day by day. It is a little bit sad when the day i have to “kill” them for chemical analysis. So sorry my babies, you all have to sacrifice for the advancement of science and engineering. May you all rest in peace. =)
So far the analysis outcomes are moderate, with some following my prediction and some not following. But that’s not all. The hardest part is that I have to find reason and statement to support the changes in physical and chemical properties of the plants. Anyway, I’m going to end this paper sooner or later for i’m scheduled to present my topic to the panels on 12th of April. So i need to speed up my progress. =)
Well, that’s my story. 5 years in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and this year happens to be my happiest and most meaningful year. It’s hard to explain in words regarding the changes i have been through but i will definitely try to write them down and share with you all in the near future.
I want to thank all the readers for staying with the blog all the while. Your visit to my blog is the driving force to keep me pushing myself to a greater distance. I am new to blogging so if my blog layout and content annoy you please forgive me. There are a lot of room for improvements and i’ll be working on it after my thesis. First things first, this is what i learned from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, don’t you agree? Well, hopefully i’m able to contribute to my country. =)
Well, to all who read my blog, thank you again for supporting. Good luck with whatever you are doing. Stay tuned for i’ll bring more content with me next time. Donovan, if you are reading this, please send my regards to your little princess. Oh ya, Eva, take good care of yourself for i’ll be expecting more Korean experience from you when i’m back!
Good luck to all my fellow comrades who are dealing with their “final moments” in UTM! =)
