One of my friend working as a part time primary school tuition teacher recently showed me something which immediately put me into a mild stage of shock. I can’t remember the exact question but it sounds something like this:

How much volume of water (ml) is required to fill a container with a capacity of 9.20L?

Technically there is nothing wrong with the first method, which is being taught by our present primary school teachers but when you compare both methods, the latter is far more efficient, less confusing and less time consuming.

The question is, how come our teachers could teach such as ineffective method to our students? The government is promoting effective learning, trying to achieve the 2020 national vision of becoming a developed country, but our teachers are… moving backwards to stone age?

Although not all teachers are alike but this scenario alone raises my concern over the quality of our primary school teachers as they are critically important for the initial academic development of young kids, especially in mathematics. If the teachers are not dedicated enough, or simply entering / exiting the classroom whenever they want, or just “cincai” teach by copying the exercises from textbooks to the blackboard / whiteboard without thoroughly explain everything in detail, what is the hope for our young generation to receive top notch education? If such things could happen in mathematics even in primary school, how will advanced mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry be taught in secondary school, where the students face the live / death situation of SPM and STPM?

DEAR PARENTS, SHOULDN’T YOU BE WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND START DOING SOMETHING???
