Sylar & Me

Gabriel Gray aka Sylar in Heroes is capable of ripping people’s head to study their brains with only 1 purpose: to study their special abilities and fine tune his brain (or maybe DNA?) to fit the exact specification of his victims so that he could obtain the same special abilities that these people have. Well, everyone still remembers how Sylar rips off the cranium with his psychokinesis ability? I’m not exactly like Sylar but I do ripped many “innocent” things apart, with a razor sharp knife, without any remorse…

LOL, just kidding. This is part of my research. I’m going to use chili as part of my experiments to understand the efficiency and effectiveness of my “special” fertilizer. In order to do so I need to grow chili plants therefore I need the seeds. According to some farmers, it’s easier to grow the plants if you could dry the chili together with salt. Well, now that the salt has been scattered everywhere, I need sunlight to do the remaining work. Unfortunately it has been raining day and night these few days. Oh my, hopefully these chili seeds survive the salting agony…

Anyway, I really enjoy the sensation of “slitting” the chili, they won’t struggle or shout in pain, all you can hear is the sound of juice oozing out when the tip of the blade penetrate the body. Haha, certainly is a good way to release stress. =p

This will be my last post before departing to Putra World Trade Center in KL. I’ve delayed this post for 2 days so I think I need to complete it before the end of this week. =)

Many of us dreamed of becoming scientist, engineer or doctor when we were young. We dreamed of contributing new technology to the community, curing a rare disease, discover new energy and material but as time flies, some of us will leave our initial dreams behind and pursue a new one. Most of all have vast interest in almost everything but the fact is that we can only choose one or maybe two and leave the rest behind. Well, like me, now you can actually relive your childhood dreams or fantasies. How? Very simple. It’s so simple that you and I can make it in just a few minutes.

With the power of World Wide Web, and the popularity of high speed broadband connection, the concept of network computing is receiving much attention ever than before. Instead of using a series of supercomputers in a lab, we can actually harness the processing power of millions of computers worldwide to support scientific projects in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics.

Well, now I can be part of many ongoing projects thanks to Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC). There are many modules for you to choose, depending on what your interest is.

For me, everything started with the 1997 movie “Contact”. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis with Jodie Foster as Dr. Ellie Arroway and the movie gave me a profound impact, changing my view on the possibilities of the existence of other civilization forever. Since then I become part of SETI@home project. Recent discoveries regarding relationship between 3D protein molecular structure and possible disease prevention put me into action in participation of the Rosetta@home and POEM@home projects. I’m a fan of Einstein’s theory about interaction of gravitational fields by stellar objects with massive density in the space-time continuum therefore I’m now in the Einstein@home project. The movie “The Day After Tomorrow” tossed me into wild imagination o f what our climate would become, hence I’m in the climateprediction.net project. And for general humanity issues, I put myself into World Community Grid. It may sound crazy to you but the very participation of such projects satisfy my imagination as astrophysicist, molecular biology scientist and climatologist. =p

Well, enough of my crap here. Experience it now. Maybe you might be lucky enough to discover something that could change the destiny of human civilization forever.

Busy…

It has been quite a long time since I last updated my blog. Been very busy these few weeks. For the last 3 weeks I have devoted my time for:

1. Research proposal
OK, things have gone beyond my planning when MOSTI rejected my first proposal. Nevertheless the change was a positive one and right now thanks to MOSTI, I have a new goal - establish part of the entire guideline for sludge application on agricultural plants. And even till now the proposal is constantly changing. LOL, I really love environmental research, makes me feel that I can contribute to Mother Nature! =p Funding? Haha, have to wait till my proposal is being approved…

2. EIA
Nothing much to describe about EIA except I have to change the design of processing system according to the client, and the worst part is that the client sometimes doesn’t even know what he’s actually doing… Quite tedious actually, have to constantly modify to suit the client’s description but everytime I change, I learn something new. Hmmm, I can be a process engineer next time =)

3. 工升
工艺大学升学辅导团 (工升) - the NPO where I first joined 5 years ago, now is teaming with young people craving for development outside the classroom. Albert Einstein once quoted “You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created.” and I can’t agree more. You can’t ask a primary school child to solve a secondary school mathematic problem. In fact, the kid will not consider it as a problem at all since he’s not required to sit for the test. The same goes for 工升 and I’m doing my best to let them see what’s in front of them. LOL, SWOT analysis again…

4. Meeting with 1st and 2nd year juniors
Meeting juniors has been one of my interests since I was in my 2nd year. You need a lot of patience to tell them things they don’t understand. And you need apply a lot of technique to inspire and make sure that they really understand you. I love the sense of satisfaction when they are able to smile after getting the “click” , realizing their strength and weakness. Hehe, maybe I can be a teacher or a counsellor in the future?

5. YSN
I was surprised that Chris from YSN contacted me 3 weeks ago. Looks like someone out there does read my blog. LOL… Anyway, the conversation was enlightening and I’m happy to know him. I like his definition of success - “doing what you would love to be doing even if you weren’t getting paid for it”. Technically we are doing the same thing - to help people around us, just that our level and platform are different but now we have one thing in common, that is YSN.com! For those who don’t know what YSN is, you should really take a look and do the self-assessment test and get the FREE 12 page personal report. There is nothing better than this, not even the school counsellors, so why waste this opportunity? Just do it!
