Going to make this as simple as possible for you to understand…

  1. First let’s pick a nice red apple from Jusco. It is so shiny. Oh yeah, must be very delicious…
  2. Secondly, pick a razor sharp and clean peeler.
  3. Don’t peel the skin, just scratch gently. Awww, the flying white yellowish spots are so lovely…
  4. This is what you get on the peeler.
  5. AND this is what you after scratching the apple softly and gently.
  6. This apple is cool!!! It gives you some extra white snow-like effects with no extra cost. What brand is this? I wanna check it out…

UTM International Week 2008 Cultural Night

Well, if you haven’t read about the exciting exhibition done by international students from various countries, you can read it here. By the way, there was a cultural performances at the same day starting from 8:30pm in Dewan Sultan Iskandar (DSI). Again, everything was fresh to me and I certainly expected some elements of surprise. Even before the events, people already gathered in front of hall entrance celebrating their presence in UTM. Too bad I couldn’t find such animated spirit from local students. Haiz…

As usual, VC was late. Everyone waited for quite some time. Nevertheless everyone was chatting happily with some little kids running around occasionally.

LOL. I wonder when VC would start to be punctual. The first event started at around 9:30pm with a traditional dance performance by Malaysian students later followed by performance by Iraqi students. The idea of dramatization of local wedding ceremony was certainly creative and the background music was so so energetic, it reminded me of Prince of Persia series. The audience particularly the Iraqi students were so completely indulged in the stage performance that the feel was like attending a superstar concert.

Malaysia:

Iraq:

The next performance was done by the Indonesian students. It was a line dance. Again it reminded me of the timeless masterpiece: Los Del Rio’s Macarena.

Indonesia:

What is homesick? Well, the young Chinese students left home for quite some time. Poor thing, look at them, they must have missed their family and friends very much. Technology sure was handy as they could sms back home. Don’t worry, Malaysians are friendly. You’ll fit into the fascinating environment in no time. =)

The stage performance by the Iranian students was very artistic yet amusing. 2 guys walking around with different gestures signify many things but too bad I’m not good enough to understand the meaning but generally the audience gave a standing ovation for their performance.

Iran:

Oh yes, finally it was the time for the Chinese students to show the world their art of music. A lady appeared and play a song with Guzheng. I chatted with this young lady during the exhibition and she was friendly and charming yet modest. Too bad I never had the chance to get her details as she was busy entertaining other visitors. If I ever meet her again I’ll get her contact for sure. By the way, I accidentally found out that when I talk to a Chinese, automatically I spoke in their accent instead of the Malaysian daily Mandarin, weird huh?

China:

LOL, back to the main topic. Soon after the Guzheng performance, the Yemenis students perform their way of wedding ceremony. Though the entire process is similar to those of Iraqi people, they had their distinct differences. Again, those adorable kids were on the stage “performing” together with the adults.

Yemen:

It was already late at night and I was getting tired. So the last part that I managed to capture was the musical performance by Kazakhstan students. The first part of the performance was done by a very handsome guy showcasing his skill with Kazakhstan’s traditional musical instrument - dombra. Aside being handsome, his skill was also fascinating. Too bad it lasted for a couple of minutes only to be followed by a duet. Initially the duet was nothing special but when the lady with the glamorous Kazakhstan traditional outfit appeared, the audience gave a thunderous applause.

Kazakhstan:

Conclusion: I’m happy to be there enjoying the performances. Since this is the first time UTM organize such special event, I’m pretty sure more similar events will take place in the future. Yeah, UTM is becoming a melting pot and to me, this is a very good news indeed. =)

UTM International Week 2008

Haha, I have always dreamed of seeing people from around the globe in UTM campus and now the dream is being realized. The amount of international students in UTM has finally increased to an amount where all of them are able to organize something wonderful and unique. To date, UTM has 1465 (around 7% of UTM student population) postgraduate and undergraduate students from 30 countries around the world. From 26th till 30th of March, The Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Internationalization), Students’ Representative Council and the community of international students organized the inaugural International Week 2008.

This was one of the special experiences I had, to be able to walk within a big crowd with diversified culture and background. It was indeed enjoyable for I was given the opportunity to witness and talk to different unique characters. Anyway, the foreigners appeared to be most excited compared to local students. I had a good time chatting with a few international students there and gosh, I was delighted to see so many unique stuff on display. These people are nice and friendly as they were eager to show you their best. The explanation and mini performances done at the booths by students from several countries were enlightening and for a poor student who can’t afford to travel abroad, this was indeed better than traveling far away only to catch a glimpse of the entire civilization. Anyway, here’s a list of countries where the students are from
in alphabetical order based on the flags found on the booklet cover:

  • Algeria
  • Bangladesh
  • Cameroon
  • China
  • Egypt
  • Ethiopia
  • France
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Kazakhstan
  • Libya
  • Mauritania
  • Nigeria
  • Oman
  • Pakistan
  • Palestine
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Sierra Leone
  • Somalia
  • Sri Lanka
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • Vietnam
  • Yemen

Ironically, the local students were not concerned about this event at all. Shouldn’t the local students grab this opportunity to absorb more ideas in the hope of forming better world views? In the end you can see the foreigners enjoy exchanging gifts and ideas among themselves, with no involvement from the local students. Sad huh? All the so called university students apparently know to read books and take part in examinations only…

Well, forget about the not so positive part of the event. Let’s proceed with the video and some photos. =)

Last but not least, here comes the video. Have fun! =)
