Effects of Global Warming

Sep-17-2008 By ColourfulWorld

A picture says a thousand words. Therefore in this post, most words are being replaced by diagrams, maps and charts. Everything will be presented accordingly to provide maximum understanding of the immediate adverse and davastating effects of global warming.

Quoted from Wikipedia:

“…As of November 2007, the CO2 concentration in Earth’s atmosphere was about 0.0384% by volume, or 384 ppmv. This is 100 ppm (35%) above the 1832 ice core levels of 284 ppm…”

We are on the verge of hitting the 400ppm threshold which many scientists believe is the tipping point for an irriversible chain reaction of catastrophic climate change.

In simple terms, increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration = increase in average global temperature.

Increase in average global temperature = increase in polar ice loss  = increase in sea level rise. What’s next?

A signifcant rise in sea level will render many parts of the world totally inundated. Places like Florida, Louisiana, Netherlands, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Shanghai and Tianjin will be in deep trouble should the current projections turn out to be a reality.

Currently we have only up to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. With the ocean getting warmer with more energy being absorbed, unprecedented deadly super storms more powerful than Katrina, RIta, Nargis and so will occur more frequently.

Currently there is no precise prediction of what our future climate will be as the global climate system is really a complex integration of various sub-systems but everything that we have detected and studied clearly tells us that Earth is sick.

This is not an issue about gender, race, politics or economy. This is an issue about the people we care, the Earth we care and the future generations we care.

We are at the crossroads now, either we neglect the signals and symptoms walking down the path of self-destruction, or we could do something by letting our concerns be heard, or even better by getting involved in major and minor effective environmental campaign to reduce our carbon footprint on this lovely blue planet.

The choice is yours…

I’ve read a few theories on global warming, some believe in it some say otherwise. Regardless, we should love and protect the planet we’re living on.

  2. daniel Said,

From all the previous posts which you have posted it seems that the developed countries are to be held accountable for the carbon footprint. The underlying problem is that they are unwilling to reduce the CO2 produced.

In view of this, my question is how can an individual who is staying in a developing country (eg. Malaysia) help to reduce carbon footprint in his daily activities. I’d suggest you could write a post on this.

Yes, there are many theories out there and not even the bright minds are able to determine the tipping point of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration.

No matter how, it is our responsibility to look after this planet. We need to protect and conserve so that our future generations have the same opportunity to enjoy what we are enjoying now. =)

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like I need to put what I have learned and practiced into the coming few posts. It would be a good idea for everyone to at least understand what they could possibly do to reduce their carbon footprint.
